Personal Injury Protection/ Car Accident Massage
Many people are not aware that their auto insurance Personal Injury Protection will pay for massage as well as chiropractic. You can chose your own massage therapist whether your chiropractor has them in office or not. All you need is an open PIP claim and a referral(prescription) from your general practitioner or your chiropractor or another doctor. These prescriptions are usually for once or twice a week for 6 weeks, and then once a week after that until six months or so, depending on how bad the injury is. This is important because whiplash recovers much more completely with both chiropractic and massage than with only chiropractic.
Why Massage is Important for Whiplash
In a car accident, your head whips back and forth so quickly that your ligaments and muscles sustain microtears-they are not torn all the way through, but some of the fibers are torn. And they swell and get inflamed. When the inflammation goes down, there is scar tissue which shortens the ligaments and muscles and limits your range of motion.
While chiropractic can realign your vertebrae where they've been pulled out of alignment by impact of the car accident, it requires skilled massage therapy to break up the scar tissue on the ligaments and muscles, lengthen the fibers again and reduce the scar tissue and restriction of movement. In addition, it helps the chiropractic adjustments stick, as relaxed muscles are less likely to pull the vertebrae out of alignment again.
Most chiropractors suggest massage with their treatment. Be very wary of the ones who want to see you three times a week for six months with no massage.
Massage reduces inflammation, reduces scar tissue, reduces pain, increases range of motion, and improves flexibility.
